PostSubject: How do we get people to help in saving site.   Fri Feb 19, 2016 6:18 pm

this was posted in the wrong area. it was a response to a suggestion by
357 eddie. i used his name as a sample, to all the reasons this was going to
be a really tough endeavor.

if you have any suggestions please list them here.
thank you.

this is the post::::

Eddie, I agree with you 100%. And, all I can tell you is good luck.  When we were collecting chips for
the CFC Cancer Games and then again for the Remembrance Games, we had to go table by table begging people to donate chips.  We all know that the chips are totally worthless, cannot be used for
anything or anywhere.  But, people horde them like they are gold.
We asked on the table i.e. 357Eddie, you do not even acknowledge that we are chatting to you. We are
totally ignored. Or another example is: 357Eddie, tells us he hates the forums because of something that happened five years ago and 357Eddie will never go to the forums again. And, the third which I find is
priceless, 357Eddie who have been playing on these tables for six or seven years tells us, "I don't know
how to use the forums."  So Eddie, this is what you and all else will run into try to educate the players to come to the forums and help this site out.  I hope you have a magic wand that you can just tap them on their shoulders and they will help out. I will help you to enlighten the players, but its going to take the
whole village to raise "this child".
Also please remember there are some that play here that are on a fixed budget and will not be able to
donate anything. There are people that are bedridden and cannot get to a bank or a post office to send
anything, we have to take all of these people into account and know if they could they would.
So, 357Eddie, what do you want me to do.  You lead and I will follow.
MM

This suggestion may not be a popular one to some, but for all of the hours that are spent playing poker by well over 100 members, I think that this should be a pay to play site if operating expenses cannot be covered through advertisers. If there was a subscription fee of only $5 a month, server fees would be covered with a VERY SMALL stipend left over for Mufasa. At $10 a month, there would also be enough for Mufasa to start a "maintenance fund" to cover any hardware or softwear updates/changes that may be necessary at some point down the road. If the members average only 2 hours a day playing time, that would break down to about 17 cents per hour cost to play at $10 per month, or 33 cents a day. Cheaper entertainment, you won't find anywhere today. There could also be discounts for a prepaid 3, 6, 9 or 12 month subscription. How the subscription fees are collected would be something for Muf to work out.

There is no doubt by anyone on this site that this is going to be a tough endeavour......it is without doubt that EVERYONE on this site is passionate enough to save it  from disappearing into cyber space...not one person on this site wants to see that happen.  Many will have suggestions and many will disagree with what is suggested......but the only way this will work is if you all at least respect that everyone is trying their very best...no matter how little one can contribute or how much you don't agree with others...you have to always believe and respect that each and everyone connected to this site does not want to see it end...that is the only way this site will succeed and be better for all...trust me  I know what it like to rebuild...its never easy but  have faith, trust and respect for each other and the battle for survival is done deal...  I am sure we can ALL do this....take care all  xx

Since there are probably only 200-300 members that are currently playing, I think a guaranteed "GET THE WORD" out option is to send an email to all of those players telling them how dire the current situation is and letting them know that whatever they can contribute is urgently needed to keep CFC up and running or it will have to shut down.  I think everyone needs to donate whatever they feel they comfortably can if they want to still enjoy the games on this site recognizing that not everyone has the same financial resources.

We do know that all the players have email because you need an email address to join this site and send back a verification after you join.

MM I do agree with you about this not being an easy task.  Amazing how many players horde these junk virtual chips, as if they magically will turn into Bitcoin.  News bulletin, when you die Mufasa takes those chips and donates them to Fresh Start, and you don't get to take them with you or leave them to anyone in your Will.

If all else fails, I agree with toto and this should become a pay to play site.  If there are any players that have played here for a long time who are financially unable to contribute at least a small monthly premium I am sure Mufasa will give them an exemption.

I think new players can be given a 3-6 month free trial period on the site before they are required to start making any contributions to play here.

Hopefully, those that it would really mean something to if this site shuts down will rise to the occasion and donate whatever they can to help keep it up and running.  Mufasa also mentioned a GoFundMe page, so maybe that will help the site as well.

Since Fc has everyones e-mail address, maybe a mass e-mail could be sent out to all fatcatters about what is happening and what they could do to help out.

This is coming at it from a different angle but....we have not heard if  any of the money will go to upgrading/fixing/ the current or purchasing  a new poker program.

My self i firmly believe if the program ran better...people would come and stay  here.  The concept is unique its not  found anywhere  else.... NOW if we get back to the level of membership that fatcat used to have obtaining advertisers would be an easier mission... right now no one would pay to advertise on a site  with such a small active membership.( advertisers  dont care if the site works  they just want bodies  to read their ads)

As  to charging and making this a pay site especially in its  current state, i would think that to be the kiss of death towards any new members surfing the net, finding this site  and wanting to join... new membership would only come from word of mouth ( family and friends  ) and this would be counterproductive  in  rebranding and growing fatcat.

So my thoughts  are  if the site is fixed and running properly,  old frustrated members hopefully  would return, new members  would see it, and like all of us fall in love with the concept  stay and  tell their friends...there by having fatcat return as a   viable site for advertisers bringing in   a monthly cash flow. But making it a pay to play site  would condemn fatcat to never  grow  and die a slow death. The one  good thing of a pay site is it would hopefully end the age old  complaint/issue of multiple accounts.....

Another  issue with a pay site is all the different currencies.. exchange rates, costs of purchasing foreign money orders ( since mufasa has posted he cannot set up a paypal account )...some members would end up paying  double  ( in their own currency )  and has been stated  before not all the membership has  disposable income lying around to  spend on  entertainment rather than   necessities of life.... these members  may be able and happy to send some cash, and maybe only  some months not all months  but by making it a  pay this or  you cant play at all  they would be  forced  to leave fatcat...

The emails on account go back in time til fatcat started, many have passed on , many have no further use for fatcat, and you can be   sure that a lot of those  emails are now inactive.

We have  i  think closer  to 100  ( tops ) active players, and a few more that log in and play sporadically... hopefully the mass mailing  would get  to all of those players  at the very least..and perhaps  interest some old members to return to fatcat...

As long as mufasa has an option to  send one mass email its a viable  idea... but if he doesnt have that option  within the program/site  ( remember this is fatcat and the program is very limited  ) i seriously doubt he would have the time  to send 49145  emails ( that is the number  given as  membership on the log in page  )

I know that if he was able to send out a mass e-mail, a lot would come back as undeliverable, but it would be worth a try. Undeliverables can just be deleted.

In a friendly response to CC:

The program runs as it does because there is no money to fix it. And even if Mufasa had the ability to fix it, he certainly doesn't have the time. The state of the softwear program is a moot issue at this time, so there's no point in belaboring it.

At it's current level of membership, I agree... finding advertisers would be a Herculean task. Relying on just "donations" to keep this site up & operating may work initially, but in due time, they would fall off as they have in the past, and we would be right back to where we are now, begging for help. A subscription fee is the only long-term answer to this enigma. The "Kiss of Death" that you speak of is already happening. No money equals no FatCat. Queenbee's idea of a free trial period for newcomers is a solid one. Once people get on a team and get a real taste of what this site is all about, most will stay.

In regard to the multiple currencies, paying by credit card should eliminate that issue, and most people either have, or have access to a credit card. As for the affordability issue, 33 cents a day is not all that much... smoke one or two fewer cigarettes a day, drink one or two less beers a week, skip that Happy Meal every other week, cut back a little on those lottery tickets... and on and on. There are many ways to "afford" $10 a month for something that occupies so much of your time. If people can't make any of these, and other very small sacrifices to play at FatCat, then I guess they really don't want to be here anyway.

Just trying to clarify... My point was  is   any of the donations  going towards  fixing the program..thus making the site  more attractive  to players and thereby  advertisers. Or are we just stagnating and prolonging the sites  demise its a viable point regarding the state of the program.

Personally i never give credit card info online, call me old fashioned  but i feel better safe than sorry  and i would imagine others  feel that way.  Mufasa  has  posted  he has a  square reader   on his phone but doesnt really want to go that route himself. Also your numbers  are  based on US  currency, which is fine if  you live in the US  but many others  on the site are not  trading US currency  so would have to pay exchange rates , money orders  etc to send US cash  (  and I am sure muf does not want the headache of Canadian Dollars, Aussie Dollars , euros, British pounds  etc  to sort out  every  month). the  $10  per month you mentioned becomes 1 1/2 to 2 times that for  some which was my point.

I think everyone needs to worry about the site actually staying online before they worry about upgrades and enhancements.  I am sure Mufasa has a number of upgrades and enhancements to the site he would like to see happen to make the current site better and attract more new players.  It is quite a job just doing what he currently has to do and there is only him doing it, and he basically has been doing it all for little or no compensation for the past 11 years.  If he can raise some money from the members I am sure he will try to improve on this place and ultimately the goal would be for the site to be able to pay to run itself.  That unfortunately is not anytime in the immediate future.

Mufasa knows how many players spend most, if not many, of their waking hours on this site and how important it is to many of them to keep this site up and running as a place for a break in the stress and some entertainment.  I am sure he is not looking to get rich off of it because that's a nonstarter.  He has clearly said he welcomes ideas, but he would be crazy to be interested in any coming from people not willing to support keeping this place up and running and backing that up with some money.  He has been pretty straightforward about how dire the situation is.  Considering all that people have gotten here for free in entertainment for the past 10 years that isn't actually much to ask.

Mailing the 200-300 that play here is the way to go for now to put it out there, so everyone knows and can't claim they didn't know, unless there is an ability to send something to every single player that ever signed up with one hit for all to make it easier for Mufasa.  What is returned is returned as no longer active.  It will make it easier to delete those members.

Once we get past the basics of keeping the site on line, where it goes after that crisis is something I am sure many members will have ideas about.  In this case, anyone not wanting to be part of the solution is just part of the problem.  Toto broke it down pretty clearly, and if you smoke give up one cigarette a day and that is the price of a pack and a half and they are at least $10 pack here or give up a can of soda.   I know many have very little resources that play here, and if they truly can't afford to even make a small contribution of a few dollars a month even if that is only $2-5 I know if they make their situation known to Mufasa they will be exempt and everyone will be cool with that and no one else needs to know.  I think people just need to give what they are able to and everyone needs to decide how much that is and how much this site means to them.  The ones that can give more clearly many of them are willing to do that because they enjoy their time here and they know 90 minutes in a movie costs at least $10.

If contributing now postpones the demise of this site for the next year even that is worthwhile, but I know there are great hopes for improving it.  No one has wanted to put any money into investing in upgrades.  It would be nice if anyone with tech skills offered to donate some help in fixing some problems, with new web page design or any upgrades.  Any skills that anyone has I am sure would be welcome.  No point in going there until it is clear there is money to keep the site online.

Bottom line is if players actually want to continue to play here they will find a way to contribute something to keep this site viable. If they don't care if this site shuts down they will find excuses not to and they won't.  If we don't all band together here, one day in the near future we will log in to play and FatCat will no longer be online.  That's a pretty simple concept.  I say lets start by at least trying to raise the money to cover the server fees for a year and some money for M to make some upgrades.

Otherwise, I think less players and Pay to Play is the only way to keep it up and running and it will be more like a private membership club.  All anyone is asking right now is for everyone to give with their heart and what they feel they can afford.  No one has the right to think others are going to want to carry their free play, so they don't have to contribute at all.  If they have a valid reason for exemption because they just can't afford to make even a small contribution, and I am sure there will be a few exceptions, Mufasa will give them an exemption.  Everyone else should not be exempt from putting some cash or a check in an envelope to keep this site viable and sending it to Wes.  If they don't feel they want to support this site staying online they should look for another place to "while away all the hours" they spend on FatCat and see what they come up with.  By the way Canadians have easy access to USD.  I should know because there are tons of them where I live that have purchased homes in the surrounding FL communities, and I am forever being given change in CAD albeit inadvertently.  I also think Mufasa is interested in starting a GoFundMe page and that will make it easy for anyone to donate in any currency, so that will not even be an issue or an excuse.  I could go into any bank or currency exchange here and get CAD as easily as I can get USD.

QB

P.S.  I am sure many of us have ideas on how the site and the games could be improved or changes and additions we would like to see, but let's try to save the place first.  After we accomplish that for the next year, then I know Mufasa is really interested in feedback from the members on how they think the site can be improved and what can be done to attract new members.  For now donating money and talking the site up on social media with a link to a cool place to play poker is about all any of us can do to save it.

TOTO and Queenbee

Ladies you have both said it all and I thank you for being so very positive!

First save the site, then worry about fixing the site.

QB i am fully aware that banks  will exchange Canadian to US currency and i can easily purchase a money order in US  funds or  Western Union wire transfer  also.. my point was not that it is unavailable in the least here  or anywhere in the world.

The point was IF its a set value in US  dollars every month, depending on the  set amount there is a possibility that  once  the exchange has been done  some people ( be they Canadians , brits euros, aussies or  whatever  )  will be paying more  in the currency that they have  to live with every day  to survive to purchase those US  greenbacks.  That extra  to  exchange  to US  could possibly be enough to have some members say  no thanks i will have  to pass...not an excuse  to save money  just economic  facts..

it keeps getting posted  to make it a  set amount  every month to be able  to play...instead of a set  amount perhaps  having  a minimum amount  or  as much as  you can afford.  For  example  3 or 5 dollars  US per month  MINIMUM... with perhaps a discount  if  you prepay  for  3 6 9 or 12 months... both just ideas and suggestions I am throwing out there.
The point I am making all along   is if a  set  amount that has  to be paid  to play at fatcat  that amount  could push  some people off the site. Having  people paying what they can each afford within their personal budgets leaves it at the individuals   discretion and  a more  viable option..I am guessing we have  100 members tops  give or take playing   so the server  costs  would be covered  with  $3-4 a month...plus any extra  going to help mufasa  and/ or repairs   and upgrades.

Not saying i cannot afford it or  that  anyone cannot afford it , but  remember  $10  to US players is  $15   or possibly more  to others players in the currency they   use  to live on  ( and that is what  counts  when paying our bills and living )... that   adds  up  quickly over the years...Especially for people  with more than 1 family member playing. $120 a year  to  US players could be closer  to  $250/  $275 for others and  $500 or more  for the family....and that could quite well be too steep on the budget  for  some on fixed incomes.. especially if that doubles  with both hubby and wife playing while on pensions etc..

For the record  i have never once  said  to  FIX the site immediately...  any reference i  made to that was is  any of the donations  going towards   repairing/ rebuilding the site to make it more enticing  for advertising  and new members  down the  road....    Its a logical   question to  be  asked as we all know that DB had  zero inclination  to  fix the site he just wanted cash. Ideally we  should all want the site  to be self  supportive by generating its own revenue not us paying for it in perpetuity.

CC,

For now Mufasa has just put out a general call for donations asking people to donate what they feel comfortable with to just keep the site up and running for awhile until a more viable plan can be considered and everyone can have input on that.  He is just asking that everyone donate something to keep the place up and running.

You seem to be worried about the minimum amount players will be asked to donate on a monthly basis while we are worried about Mufasa having money to pay for the server for the next 12 months.  Many of us are trying to send him as much as we can, so there is a little slush fund and breathing room for how best to deal with what can actually be done.  It would also be reassuring to everyone to know that enough players have donated funds to cover server fees and at least some minor updates to keep CFC on line for the next year.  It would also take a lot of stress off of Mufasa.  Once again, he is doing this for the members and not because he is getting rich off of FatCat.

Right now all anyone is being asked to do is give from the heart what they can knowing it takes USD $3600 annually to pay the server fees to keep the site online plus any additional money that can be raised for some basic upgrades.  I don't think that is too much to ask players to make whatever donation they can to help keep the site up and running so we can all continue to enjoy playing here.  The largesse of each player is for them to determine right now.  No one has set an amount.   It would be helpful for Mufasa to know if the members support doing that and he will have the resources for it, so he can plan on what is really feasible.

This is a US based site and the fact that it operates using USD is not going to change.  If I do business on overseas websites I have to pay in their currency.  As Americans, we have to pay USD 14.50 for GBP 10, so that is a moot point that you require CAD 14 for USD 10 and probably AUD 15 or NZD 15 for USD 10.  When Mufasa gets a GoFundMe page set up people can donate in any currency without exchange fees.  He will just note the amount in each currency.

The rest is all open for future discussion.  Toto proposed a set amount as a "pay to play," as a last resort if players didn't come up with some heartfelt donations based upon what they feel all the enjoyment they get from this site is worth. Clearly everyone has a different financial circumstance and, if we are being honest, some are just more generous than others.  That is a last resort to keep it up and running for those that are willing to "pay to play" on FatCat to continue to enjoy the many hours they spend daily and/or weekly playing poker on this site. A future plan can be considered after we get over this initial hurtle as to what might be required of the members and hopefully the site continues to attract new players and that means more to carry whatever burden there is and a lower donation fee for all if that is still required going forward.

The problem is DB never figured out a way to make this place generate a real revenue stream, so other than the server fees it has pretty much been neglected and no upgrades or updates have been done in many years.  I know Mufasa is hoping to change that with the help of the members.  A better site, as you say, will attract more new players and more players adds up to the potential for other ways to make money.

Take care,

QB

P.S.  This is not any kind of disagreement, but I think you are viewing this simple plea for funds to keep CFC online as something far more complicated than what it actually is right now.  It really is simple, you either give some money and you hope for the best and this site will remain online or you look to find a new place to play because it cannot stay online without help from the players.  I remain hopeful and optimistic that there are many members who will think it is worth sending in some of their hard earned cash to help, so they can continue enjoying the games and the camaraderie on FatCat.

Then say it coast 5 dollors a person a month to save the site players over seas send 1 check a years 60 dollors. Pay up front players live here do the same only 60 dollors it over paid for.
Then every one if they have it send what ever you can to put back to fix the site.
That money will add up over a year little by little fix the site.
Plus getting new players ill tell u all this that countin me to we all need be a litter nicer on the table that new players see us aurgin and leave b4 they stay.
I not sayin say nhs to anyone but stop startin trouble. NOW jump on me ty

First thing is ask every players to please write there names down
here and if they can afford to help fatcat and mufasa keep this site
runnin.
This way we know who can and will help and the ones that don't have the funds but there family they play free I think only fair.
But I think we need pay like 3 month in advance so mufasa know the money is there not have to worry.
I my self can give 10 dollors a month on the first ill send 30 dollors
every 3 months in advance I love help this month but 3 cars I had pay taxs
own 800 dollors hurt me.
PLEASE write names down what can give every 3 month to the site

Ideally we  should all want the site  to be self  supportive by generating its own revenue not us paying for it in perpetuity.

well said i cant afford to send 10dollar a month at the moment so if this is gonna be a pay to play site guess im
gone i guess according to some other comments/suggestions in this thread

BARK LESS, WAG MORE

if this gonna be a pay to play site you will lose probably 75% of the players
i for one cant pay anything at all at the moment due to my private incoms so therefor i wont be able to play according to your suggestion

If people can't make any of these, and other very small sacrifices to play at FatCat, then I guess they really don't want to be here anyway.

so if people cant afford 10-20 dollar per month they really dont wanna be here thats a big statement
i for one cant afford it so you mean i dont wanna be here

Toto was just offering up the "pay to play" option as a last resort if the members did not band together to all try to donate whatever they can afford to help the site stay online.  If that is $2 or $5 or whatever it is then that is just what it is.

This thread was started solely to appeal to the members to support a site they really enjoy, so it can stay on line.  Pay to Play would be a last resort and no one here wants this site to go down that road if it doesn't have to.

If people are not willing to back the site financially the only options are to shut it down or offer it as a "pay to play" private gaming site. I am sure some members might leave, but the site would not have any choice but to operate that way. No one has said anywhere that everyone needs to contribute the same amount and clearly some have extenuating circumstances that might mean they are not in a position to donate at all and that would be something they would need to talk to Mufasa about to be exempt from being expected to donate to support it.

There are only three options:

(1) Members voluntarily donate whatever they can to keep the site on line so that Mufasa has enough to pay the monthly server fees;

(2) The site becomes a "pay to play" site with enough members willing to pay to do that to keep it on line; or

(3) It shuts down permanently because there is not enough donated to cover the monthly server fees.

Everyone is free to give their opinion.  Everyone is also free to donate or not based upon their own means and whether or not they wish to contribute to the site being able to stay online.

We are all just players and we are just hoping that people that play here care enough about the site and enjoy the games enough to be willing to help it stay online.

Gatekeeper... you are taking what I wrote out of context.

What the meaning was is this... there are many things that we all spend money on frivolously or excessively. If we are not able to afford $10 a month (about 33 cents a day) to play at FatCat, then FatCat is not as important to us than those frivolous & excessive expenditures, so I guess that they don't want to be here. It's all a matter of priorities.
